SOLAR DECATHLON COMPETITION, MADRID JUNE 2010

House "Luukku", designed by Aalto University Wood Program students, won the first architect price in international Solar Decathlon competition, Madrid June 2010. Focus in the competition is energy efficient but still great looking architecture and the use of modern solar energy technologies. For the flooring material hardwood floors were a natural choice because like it is proven wood feels warmer than any other material under our feet. Students choose hardwood floor Saima Wirkkala for Luukku and in the structure model it was highly admired and it astonished the visitors. This small house of 40m² will come back to Finland in the summer 2011 for Holiday Home Fair in Mäntyharju.

DESIGNERS' EVENT AT THE WORLD EXPO, SHANGHAI

Qingdao Histep and Karelia-Upofloor Oy had a Designer's Event in the World Expo in Shanghai June 2010. The Finnish pavilion "Giant's Kettle" is a great public project and also a tough wear resistance test for our Saima floors because over 4 million people are expected to walk on it during 1.5.-31.10.2010 while the Expo is open. Main speaker in the Designers Event's was designer Pekka Toivanen from Muotohiomo Oy. He designed the exhibition architecture of the pavilion's 2nd floor and visually Saima patterns are suggesting people to walk according to his script. Mr. Pekka Toivanen could touch the feelings of his Chinese colleagues living and working in the Shanghai metropolis, with photos of Finnish nature as a source of his inspiration.
